community orchard

Current Projects -> greenspace and ecology -> community orchard

Project

Growing from a partnership with the Vancouver Food Bank, The Strathcona Community Centre, The Raycam Community Centre and neighbours the EYA has helped to create a community orchard and picnic area on the edge of the EYA Youth Garden in Cottonwood Community Garden.  Situated right at the corner of Raymur St. and Malkin Ave, this corner has a lot of exposure! However, sadly, does not have a lot of charm.  Up until the Spring of 2010, the site was covered in blackberries and other invasive weeds, and a few very sick/unproductive fruit trees.

Call to Action

Thanks to the Vancouver Park Board, EYA was granted a Neighbourhood Matching Grant to work with the community to create an orchard and picnic area on this site.  Join us in re-designing the area, planting it and creating some colourful interesting seating.  We need your imagination and muscle!  Once this corner is producing food, the Vancouver Food Bank will work with EYA to distribute the food to their clients or to partner community kitchen projects.  Community kitchens work with groups of individuals teaching/practicing cooking skills and building knowledge around food security.
