Green success for EYA intern

Erika Richmond began her internship along with 11 other interns with the Environmental Youth Alliance in September 2007. As she already had previous experience in urban agriculture (UA) in Toronto, Vancouver and Ecuador, when in came time for the UA interns to choose their independent projects it was clear that Erika was ready to take on new skills that would further her path in the environmental field. Having received a request from a local business (Eclipse Awards) for some help in putting a green roof on their downtown east side location at Heatley and Alexander , EYA youth coordinator Samantha Charlton proposed the project to the interns. Erika was eager to get on board.

Shortly following Erika decided to take the green roof courses offered at BCIT East Vancouver location. For the next 6 months Erika researched, consulted and divulged herself into the world of green roof design. While carrying on her internship with EYA, she spent many volunteer hours, even after the internship was over, working on the successful completion of the project. Through the help of the many volunteers Erika coordinated in the installation of the new roof, the sedum plants sit happily in their new home at Heatley and Alexander, providing a list of benefits to the location.

Erika is now ready to move on. She already has offers coming in for her next green roof projects. Surely having learned from a few mistakes, but mostly offering a wealth of new knowledge.
