Why you should care......

The World Urban Forum III (WUF) is an international meeting on urban-issues, produced by the United Nations and the government of Canada to be held in Vancouver, Canada, June 2006.

The WUF will be a unique opportunity for citizens, community groups, academics and governments from around the world to meet and work together to find new solutions to the complicated problems facing our quickly growing cities.

In order to truly involve young people in the WUF process, a group called the World Urban Forum & Youth (WUFY) has been formed. WUFY is working closely with partner organizations like the City of Vancouver Youth Outreach Team, KAYA (Knowledgeable Aboriginal Youth Association), Check Your Head, One Stop Youth Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, many others and with Forum organizers to integrate young people’s exexperiences anddeas into the agenda and events during the conference.

The World Urban Forum will be an amazing opportunity for young people involved in successful youth-led and youth-driven projects and programs to create new networks and most of all to show international policy-makers, scientists and business people that youth are organizing to create positive change in their communities around the world every day.

The following Podcast episodes profile how young people have come together and how you can get involved.

The central theme of the World Urban Forum is: Sustainable Cities: Turning Ideas into Action.

Innovative, down-to-earth, community-based ideas and solutions that lead to real positive change - not empty promises made behind closed doors - are the focus of the World Urban Forum.

Since urbanization is a huge and complex topic, this main theme has been divided into three sub-themes:

1. Urban Growth and Environment How do we make our rapidly growing cities and their environments safer and healthier for young people? How can we help to solve problems like climate change, urban sprawl and pollution?

2. Partnership and Finance – How can governments and business help youth to make our cities better to live in? How can young people around the world connect with each other and work together better?

3. Social Inclusion and Cohesion – How do we ensure that young people are a part of making the decisions that affect them? How can we find solutions to problems like poverty, violence and drug addiction?

Since populations around the world are proportionally younger than ever before, especially in developing countries, it is critical that the WUF include the perspectives, experiences and ideas of children and youth living in cities.
