It is our pleasure to announce that the World Urban Forum &
Youth Committee is currently accepting applications for the World
Youth Forum preceding the World Urban Forum June 16th -18th 2006,
in Vancouver, Canada. The committee is accepting applications
from young people age 15-29.
Background
The World Youth Forum (WYF): Bringing
Global Youth Leaders Together
The World Youth Forum is a three-day youth conference taking
place the weekend before the WUF and will be a chance for young
people involved in exciting youth-led projects around the world
to meet, share best practices, connect and collaborate with each
other.
The World Youth Forum will bring together 300 Canadian and International
youth to profile youth-led projects and write a youth declaration
to include with their preparation to participate at the World
Urban Forum.
The WYF will be a space for engaged, motivated young people to
be inspired, build networks and work together to ensure that youth
voices are heard by the politicians, planners, business people
and others at the WUF3.
The World Youth Forum will culminate in the Global Hip-Hop Mainstage,
a four-hour interactive show featuring MCs, DJs and performers
from Vancouver and around the globe.
Expected WYF outcomes:
o Knowledge transfer: Models of best practices for youth participation
in sustainable development.
o Address the Millennium Development Goals and the youth component
of the UN millennium campaign. (www.millenniumcampaign.org)
o Training in arts based models of advocacy
o Profiling and showcasing youth led development project
All qualified participants will be asked to cover:
• Cost of travel from and back to the country/region of
origin
• Travel documents and visa requirements
• Health insurance
The WUFY Organizing Committee will provide assistance
with:
• Administration as required on a daily basis
• Transportation to and from the venue
• Facilitation of the visa process for delegates
Criteria
• Youth: ages 15-29
• Leadership and advocacy skills
• Established interest and dedication to development issues
through previous experiences or affiliation with a youth network
or NGO working on development issues
• Understanding of issues of importance to young people
in their countries and communities
• Commitment to return to their home country/region to undertake
follow-up work with young people
Candidates must be involved in youth development in
areas such as:
• Making a living: Youth and the economy
• Health Care: On the frontline with HIV/AIDS and other
diseases
• Environment: Creating healthy and sustainable communities
• Safety and non-violence: Youth as peace-builders
• Youth as Leaders: Locally, nationally and internationally
• Gender: Achieving balance and equity
• Arts based activism
• And other areas related to poverty reduction, human rights,
sustainable livelihoods and the Millennium Development Goals.
